there’s a song by third world called ‘sense of purpose’; it’s a song i like a lot … so anyhow, this piece of dready art is called ‘sense of purple’.
the shapes below are actually a row of villas in the cayman islands that people call the ‘smurf houses’; very cool, almost amorphous (attached) houses, along seven mile beach, whose rooms lack normal flow and where none of the walls seem quite straight. The cones on the roves are actually venturi vents designed to let the hot air rise and be sucked out … in a heavy rainstorm they act in the opposite manner and it actually rains inside the houses.
To make a long story longer, the client for this odd bit of art, lives in one of these houses and as I drew them I became aware of the hippie-ishness of them and that began to reflect on the art … beyond that, when I photographed them the sky in the background was periwinkle, a colour that seemed too weak for the art and became instead a deep purple.
the cosmic nature of the houses led to this idea of an odd dreamlike divide between the sea and the sky and the flowers for stars …
with your sense of purpose!
