Mermaids – Original on Canvas 44×14
‘mermaids’ is a commission, 3 girlfriends giving a gift to the 4th for her birthday …
so the birthday girl has a lovely, peaceful, tranquil house on little cayman to which all 4 often retreat to be at rest from busy lives … i like little cayman … my father used to tell a story of the plane that went out to the sister islands in the very early 70’s and how when they were coming in to land the stewardess would walk down the aisle, lift the floorboards and pour a quart of hydraulic fluid into the reservoir so that the wheels would go down …
is not like that anymore; modern planes fly in modern people to visit modern houses but in the same quiet tranquility … little cayman is an ace of a place.
but back to the art – i chose to portray the 4 women as exactly alike except fro their hair and skin colour: they have the same bodies, they’re wearing the same glasses … it was the sense of sisters I was after and in my mythological mind mermaids are all essentially the same like a school of fish where the differences are very very slight.
peace!
