dready art ‘all woman is warrior’ – 24×16 – image
i was drawing this character for someone and it wasn’t working out for the purpose they wanted, but but but, for me, for me it was telling a story …
the world I grew up in was one in which women were the glue; on the surface it may have seemed like a patriarchal society but when you walked into most of the homes, when you looked around yourself at the places where things got done you realised that it was women creating the space in which we were living, it was women who were (and are) the doers, the controllers of and the earners of the sustainable incomes – the woman who raised me was strong, formidable, driven, successful and certainly the typical of the society that I knew … and I came to realise that, at least in terms of where and when I grew up, that it seemed that men were allowed a semblance of a power that they didn’t actually have … it was by no means a xanadu of perfect equality, no man, far from it because the man, the boy was still idolised …
we’re in the midst of a surge of female empowerment and so in drawing her and seeing that she seemed so strong and vibrant and feminine, i ‘evolved’ her …
all woman is warrior …
truth …
