we were in scotland in the fall while the bracken was turning and it gave the hills a distinctive colour … one day, while out walking, she said, ‘look how red the hills look’ …

kingston, jamaica, has, like rome, 7 hills, and one of them is red hills … they are red, not because of bracken but because of the dirt …

jamaica is one of the worlds exporters of Bauxite, the red, red earth that goes on to make Aluminium; and for that reason as much as any other, the idea of drawing the red hills of scotland appealed to me … this ‘alliterated’ link between me and my ‘home’ … the idea that I carry it with me wherever I go.

which sounds oh so terribly artistic when you say it out loud! eeeeeeek!
